The New York Yankees won their fifth game in six games and clinched their second postseason berth in six years when they beat the New York Red Bulls 3-2 in extra time Sunday.
The Yankees are still three games back of the Red Bulls, who are tied for second place in the Eastern Conference.
The win was the Yankees’ seventh in eight games and the first in the series since 2007.
The victory gave New York its first playoff berth since 2008.
The Red Bulls have three wins in their last six games, including a 2-1 loss to the Los Angeles Galaxy on Tuesday.
“It’s been a long road,” manager Brian Bliss said.
“But I know the people here know the road.
I think we are ready for this.”
The Yankees, who have lost five of six, scored three runs in the eighth to take a 2.0-percentage point lead in the best-of-seven series.
The first two games were decided by one run apiece, so the victory was a bit of a surprise.
The result left New York with a 3-1 lead in its last three games.
New York has won its last five regular-season games against the Red Bull.
The home team was without defender Miguel Cabrera (knee), right-back David Villa (hamstring), midfielder Ruben Sierra (groin) and midfielder Tyler Adams (klebsiecis).
Both Cabrera and Villa were injured during the series.
“I think it’s a good result for us,” Bliss said of the victory.
“We’re playing a tough game tonight.
We’ve been playing better soccer than the Redbulls and we’ve been getting a lot of points.
I’ve been very pleased with our defensive effort.”
Carlos Ruiz scored two goals and the Red Wings scored a pair of assists to help the Yankees win their fifth straight game.
Red Bulls head coach Jesse Marsch said his team is happy with the result.
“You could see the frustration in the crowd, the excitement and the pride,” Marsch told reporters after the game.
“For us, this is a game to win and that’s what we’ve done tonight.”
The win helped the Yankees to fifth place in Major League Soccer, just one spot behind Chicago for the third wild card in the playoff race.
New Jersey and Chicago are both in the final playoff spot, and the Yankees have the second wild card.
New England and San Jose will host a wild-card game in New York on Sunday.
