The Dutch have a speciality for cakes with a distinctive Danish-style design, but Vegemites are on the way here too.
Owner Tade van der Meer says he hopes the new cakes will attract people from around the world to his cafe in the city of Zandvoort.
“We’ve been getting a lot of enquiries from people from all over the world, and we hope that this is something that will appeal to them,” he told the Irish Times.
“I’m very happy that it’s in the country, I don’t think any other cake is here, it’s a Danish-styled cake.”
Van der Meers cake is made with vegan butter, coconut milk and soy milk.
Vegemiter is a popular local brand in the town of Zorluys and he plans to bring it back to the Netherlands in the near future.
Vegan and non-vegan cakes are often served at the Netherlands’ famous cake markets, but the country has strict laws governing what types of foods can be eaten and where.
Vegetarian cakes can be bought at shops and bakeries and are not allowed to be sold in supermarkets.
Vegan-friendly products can also only be sold by farmers’ markets.
Veggie cakes are also banned at most national parks and are only allowed in some restaurants.
The cakes are normally served in a small tin with a cake stand and a large mug cake is served with cream cheese icing.
Vegg-free cakes can also be found in cafes.
Van der Mere says Vegemitites in the Dutch capital, Amsterdam, and Rotterdam are already making their way to the Dutch dessert market in the southern city of Groningen.
Vegepotters and other “vegan-friendly” products are also becoming increasingly popular at Dutch coffee shops.
Vegemite cake is one of many vegan products available in Dutch cafes.
The cafe will also be opening its own vegan bakery.
“When we started Vegemitters we knew that the market is going to be the main part of our business, we were really looking forward to it,” van der Mer e said.
“It’s something that we really want to promote and grow.”
